Bloody common sense. How many more kids have to die before they make it law?
yeah nah they'll just ban them eventually instead of making helmets compulsory. classic nanny state backwards logic 🤷
tbh I wear a helmet on my scooter but most people I see don't bother. feel like a dork but better than a head injury I guess
Make it compulsory AND give out free helmets with every rental. Won't fix everything but it's a start.
Work in emergency and honestly the number of e-scooter head traumas we see is ridiculous. Helmets are cheap, brains aren't.
New Zealand's e-scooter injury rates have been well-documented in peer-reviewed literature since 2019. Mandating helmets is evidence-based and overdue. However, enforcement and infrastructure also need addressing.

classic RNZ with the big words. Tell that to the family who just lost their son
People should just take personal responsibility instead of needing the government to regulate every little thing. That said, rip to the young fella.
stuffed. Personal responsibility is great but people are idiots mate.
I'm skeptical whether this actually changes anything. Cyclists have to wear helmets and still die. The issue is cars and poor infrastructure, not helmets.
evidence clearly shows helmets reduce severe injury in e-scooter crashes. That is not debatable.
Such a tragic loss. My heart goes out to the family. Hope something good comes from this.
lol typical. Wait till they ban them entirely because of one accident. Nanny state strikes again.
This. Bike lanes for scooters, lower speed limits, and actual enforcement. Not just a helmet law and job done.
but if you hit a pothole or a car hits you, helmet ain't doing much. Infrastructure needs fixing too.
watch them ban e-scooters in the CBD next and pat themselves on the back ffs
facts. I've nearly come off dodging potholes. helmets help but roads are shocking.
