Frequently asked questions
Why is the UV index high in New Zealand?▾
NZ has relatively clean air, lower ozone at our latitude in summer, and high sun angles. Combined with outdoor lifestyles, this means sunburn can happen quickly even on cool or cloudy days.
What UV index needs sunscreen in NZ?▾
When the UV index is 3 or above, SunSmart recommends slip, slop, slap and wrap — shade, sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. In summer many NZ locations exceed 8–11 (very high to extreme).
Can you get sunburn on a cloudy day in NZ?▾
Yes. Up to 80% of UV can penetrate light cloud cover. Check the UV index rather than only the temperature before spending time outdoors.
Which NZ cities have the highest UV?▾
Northern and central North Island centres such as Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga often see higher summer UV than southern cities, but Christchurch and Nelson can also reach extreme levels in summer.
