Privacy

MYNZ (mynz.co.nz) is run by MYNZ Limited, a New Zealand company. We follow the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. We try to collect as little as possible: you can read every town feed and post without an account.

What we collect

• A random device ID in a cookie (mynz_did). It is not linked to your name. We use it so you can edit or remove your own posts, so your votes and “still happening” taps count once, for chats, and to stop spam.
• Your chosen town in a cookie (mynz_town) so we can open your feed next time.
• What you post: posts, replies, polls votes, market listings, chat messages, photos and videos, and the first name you choose to show. Posts and listings are public. Chats are only visible to the two people in them (and to us if a message is reported or we need to stop abuse).
• Your email, only if you sign up for the weekly town email. We confirm it first and every email has a one-click unsubscribe.
• Push notification details, only if you turn on alerts: the address your browser gives us for notifications, your town, which alerts you want, and your bin day if you set one.
• Your location, only when you tap “Use my location” to find your town. Your browser works out the nearest town; we do not store your coordinates.
• Basic visit counts: which pages are opened, in which town, and roughly when. We do this ourselves, without advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
• Server logs kept by our hosting provider (including IP addresses) for security and troubleshooting.

Your name for posting and your bin day are also kept in your browser's storage on your device.

What we don't do

• We don't sell your information or share it with advertisers.
• We don't ask for your address. Please don't post anyone's home address or private details.

Who helps us run MYNZ

Railway (hosting and database, United States), Cloudflare (domain and photo storage), Resend (sending the weekly email), and your browser's push service (for example Google or Apple) to deliver alerts. Public data such as weather, quakes, roads, power cuts and news headlines comes from the sources named on each post. If we use AI to write a news summary, only the public headline and blurb are sent to the AI provider, never your information.

How long we keep things

Posts stay until you or we remove them. Email and alert details are deleted when you unsubscribe or turn alerts off. We remove information we no longer need.

Your choices and rights

You can ask to see or correct the information we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by emailing hello@mynz.co.nz. Because there are no accounts, tell us which device or email it relates to and we'll help. If you're not happy with how we handle a privacy concern, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
