This is a disgrace. $60 million of our hard earned money to keep a cement plant open that should have closed years ago. And they had the nerve to calculate a $345 million 'hit' as if that's our problem. Meanwhile our roads are falling apart and hospitals are underfunded. The government needs to stop handing out blank cheques to corporate mates and start looking after actual New Zealanders. I'm absolutely furious.
Look I know ppl are angry but that plant employs a lot of locals up in Northland. Would rather our cement be made here than shipped from overseas anyway.

tbh I don't get why we need a tariff on imported cement. Competition keeps prices down. This just protects an outdated plant.
Golden Bay cement is actually good quality, better than some imports. But $60m? That's steep. Should've been a loan not a grant.
