Another billion down the drain for outdated fossil fuels while the country burns. Typical Winston Peters, always looking backwards. Greenpeace is right – we should be investing in solar and wind, not digging up more oil. Absolute madness.
nah get stuffed. Oil and gas exploration is how we keep prices down. You do realise your precious wind turbines need gas backup right? Like it or not, fossil fuels aren't going anywhere.
Oh here we go, Greenpeace telling us how to run the country while they fly around in private jets. Oil and gas keeps the lights on, mate. We need baseload power, not fairytale windmills that stop when there's no wind. Wake up.
Exactly! People don't get how the grid actually works.
ffs can we just have a proper debate without the usual screaming? Both sides have a point – we need energy security but also gotta think about the future. That said, $1b is a lot of cash that could go into stuff like geothermal or hydro. Just saying.

we've got plenty of geothermal. This is just a handout to his mates in the oil industry.
Greenpeace again 🙄 They'd rather we freeze in the dark than drill a single well. Our electricity prices are already through the roof because of all these renewables targets.
harder. Greenpeace has been wrong about everything for 50 years but you still believe them.
Anyone else find it weird that this announcement comes out on a Monday morning? Classic Winston distraction tactic while something else is probably going down. 😂
this is probably the real reason. Winston knows how to play the media.
So we're gonna spend 1 billion on something that might work in 10 years while we're already in a cost of living crisis. seems legit.
your head out of the oil well. The cost of living crisis is caused by corporate greed, not a lack of drilling.
I love how all the oil shills come out defending this. Look at the science, you dinosaurs. The planet is literally on fire and we're still arguing about whether to invest in smoke detectors.
worst of both worlds: we'll end up with neither the oil revenue nor decent renewables. Classic NZ planning.
Truth. We'll probably spend half the billion on consultants and feasibility studies and get nothing done.
