If you’re renting in Auckland and your landlord has tried to pass on the costs of a healthy homes inspection or compliance certificate, know that they’re not allowed to charge you for it. That’s on them under the Residential Tenancies Act. I had a mate argue this with their property manager and got the fee removed. Also, some landlords insist on periodic inspections every month – legally it’s every 4 weeks max unless there’s a specific reason. Keep a record of everything and don’t be afraid to call Tenancy Services. Knowing your rights saves you money and hassle.
