Just a heads-up for anyone renting in Auckland: if your landlord tries to hike the rent by more than the market rate, check out the Tenancy Tribunal. I had a mate who was facing a $50/week increase with no justification. He filed a case and got it reduced back to a reasonable amount. The form's pretty straightforward, and you don't need a lawyer. Worth knowing your rights!
