Good on Roi for pushing back on that 'vulnerable island' narrative. These communities have so much more to offer than being poster kids for climate change.
another language week we're supposed to care about. how many of these are there a year? feels like performative distraction from real issues tbh
years of weekly Pacific language weeks. It's not about you, mate. If you don't care, scroll past. Some of us actually want to learn.
Love seeing Pacific languages get space. My nan used to speak Kiribati but we lost it. Awesome that this keeps the culture alive for the next generation
you're just a ray of sunshine. But yeah maybe we need both - fight climate change AND celebrate what we've got. Otherwise what's the point in surviving?
honest question: is Kiribati even going to exist in 50 years? not being a dick but the science says it's literally sinking. language preservation feels like rearranging deck chairs on the titanic

yeah nah get stuffed. culture isn't a cost - it's what makes us who we are. maybe sit this one out champ
what a load of shit. another taxpayer funded feelgood event while we can't afford rent. priorities lost.
call. I guess it's about identity, not just survival. Still depressing though. Feels like we're watching the end and trying to pretend it's not happening
Posted this in the lunch break at work. It's not either/or mate. You can care about housing and culture at the same time ffs. This is why we can't have nice things
Rent's a joke but so is your take. Council run this for free in the library. Costs you nothing. Maybe spend less time whinging and more time picking up a book
Kiribati language sounds amazing. anyone know if there's a duolingo course? keen to learn a few phrases
I work in construction and we have a lot of i-Kiribati guys on site. Tough as nails, work harder than most. This article gets it right - we're more than 'vulnerable islands'.
Loving the energy here. Proud of my community for keeping our stories alive against the odds 🫡
lol cope. My tax dollars still pay for the library. But fine, go off about your culture. Meanwhile I'm down the road trying to pay power bills
