ffs. so supermarkets charge suppliers to even get on the shelf? and then still charge us the earth at the checkout. classic NZ duopoly.
so true. and the 'specials' aren't even special half the time, just the normal price with a yellow sticker
yeah nah this is just another reason to shop at the local butcher and vege shop. screw the big guys.
support your local! our farmer's market is legit cheaper
I work in a small bakery that supplies to one of them. They wanted a 'listing fee' just to stock our bread. It's not a shelf, it's a racket.
it's worse than that. they also charge for 'failure to meet sales targets' - so if your product doesn't sell enough, they fine you

this is literally the textbook definition of monopolistic behaviour. commerce commission asleep at the wheel again 🤦
commerce commission is a toothless watchdog. they get a fine that's pocket change to these guys
lol but they'll say 'we need to keep prices low for customers'... yeah right, just low for your shareholders
wait wait wait... so if I'm a small business I have to PAY to get my product in the store? and then they still mark it up? how is that legal
legal but dodgy as... they wrote the rules themselves basically
worked at a big supermarket chain years ago. can confirm, suppliers get absolutely rinsed. the 'promotional fees' are a joke. and the markdowns are forced on them too.
yeah the promo fees are essentially kickbacks. it's gross.
we need a royal commission into this. food prices are already out of control and this is why.
