you can see why this gets traction with students and renters.. The long game matters more than a quick headline cycle.
Yeah nah, it's just semantics. Equality means everyone gets the same, equity means everyone gets what they need. Simple.
It's not semantics when funding decisions are made based on it. Huge difference in outcome.
I think understanding the difference is actually really important in schools. My kid's teacher explained it well.
Exactly! Give a hand up, not a handout. Different people need different things to succeed.
So equity means giving some people more than others? That's just discrimination with a fancy name. What about merit?
doesn't mean much if you started behind. Level the playing field first, then compete.
Been reading about this in the context of Te Tiriti. It's not about equal shoes, it's about everyone having shoes that fit.
that fit. exactly.
All I know is in my job, we just need clear rules that apply to everyone equally. Equity stuff just confuses things.
rule doesn't fit everyone though. Some need extra support to get to the same starting line.
We learned about this in my social studies class! Equity is fair outcomes, equality is same treatment. Both matter but depends on context.
My nana needs a walker to get around. Giving everyone a walker is equality. Giving her one is equity, but it's also just common sense.
Hard to get excited about this when we've got real issues in healthcare and education. Just fix the potholes first maybe?
ay. Can't argue with that.
Equity vs equality debate is so tired. Why can't we just focus on helping people who are struggling without labelling it?
people like to argue over labels instead of doing the mahi.
You hear versions of this on site and in the office all the time.. the equity part is what ppl will argue about RNZ group chat is gonna go off. The direction is fine, but the rollout will matter more.

This one will land with plenty of people for obvious reasons. People usually just want a sensible outcome here.
you notice this fast once it hits everyday routines.. It usually comes down to whether it makes life easier or harder. bloody hell.
