Had a nightmare with a rental manager in Queenstown last year - turned out I had rights I didn't know about. If you're renting, get your bond lodged with Tenancy Services within 23 working days. Also, if you want to install a dishwasher or something, you can ask the landlord in writing and they can't unreasonably refuse. Saved me a headache when I wanted to put some shelves up. Another tip: take photos of EVERYTHING when you move in, email them to yourself with a timestamp. Landlords can't deduct for minor wear and tear either - I got my full bond back because I knew what was fair. Seriously, knowing the RTA rules makes all the difference.
