Just saved a bunch on my power bill by switching to controlled/night-rate water heating. Most NZ houses have a low-pressure cylinder that can be set to heat overnight on a cheaper tariff. Takes 10 mins with your switchboard – just flick the 'night rate' switch if you have one. My bill dropped about $30/month. Check with your retailer first but it's a quiet win most of us forget about.
